The question which has been asked more times than I care to count over the years..... "If I protect my Main Service Entrance, am I totally protected?" The answer to this question is unequivocally "No."

Yes, you will be protected from external surges (i.e. Lightning), but external surges only account for 20 percent of all transient-surge related problems. Over 80 percent, and in some cases up to 90. Causes of internally generated transients include the cycling of motors and drives as well as de-energizing, the switching on and off of lighting.

Lighting Surge With No Protection

This picture, which is taken from test results conducted at General Electric in Houston, shows 24 transients in excess of 1200 volts caused by simply turning off a single, two bulb fluorescent fixture with No Protector in place. Lighting Surge With Surge Protection On-Line

The second picture shows the calming of the sine wave with a suppressor on line. With the suppressor installed, the transients are suppressed, providing safe voltage levels to equipment of all kinds. Protecting bulb-ballast can extend the life of lighting up to 75%.

By adding protection to the lines inside your facility, you can dramatically reduce the effects of transients created by variable frequency drives (VFDs). Which will, in turn, greatly reduce overall electronic maintenance and replacement costs affiliated with VFD created transients.

Extensive studies have proven time and time again that 70 to 90 percent of all transient related problems typically occur WITHIN the customer's facilities as a direct result of inductive load switching; which are commonly referred to as "switching transients". Elevators, copiers and air conditioning systems all contribute to electrical power quality problems that can cost real dollars in both downtime and service and repair charges.

The larger the facility, the more complex the electrical distribution system. Thus, exponentially more potential for internally generated transients/surges. You can reduce your electrical maintenance by over 40 percent and increase the life of your bulbs, ballasts and electric motors by protecting all aspects of your power grid, from the main service entrance to sub panels to individual electronic devices. In today's electronic age, power quality correction is no longer an option, it's a necessity.
